front left wheel wierd movement...

Well for about a week now every time i turn the wheel at all left of dead center, there is sort of a scraping noise coming from the front left wheel. I finally jacked it up and was seeing if redoing all of the lugs was the problem when i noticed that the whole wheel and caliper move when you jerk it. It is moving in a camber kind of way like one hand on the top and one on bottom and rocking it. I jacked up the other side and it is solid, so what can the problem be????

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

I got a 6 pack on the balljoint on the outside of the lower lateral link. I've posted elsewhere on this site how to test for this.

Here is one thread

This is a safety issue, it this is what it turns out to be. Get it fixed!

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

Doesn't the dealer have to warranty the lower balljoints if they are found to be bad? I know they have to warranty something in the suspension and I'm pretty sure it's the balljoints.

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

They were recalled on almost all 2Gs. They have various ways of getting out of covering it though. Definitely worth a shot.

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

if you are moving it like with your hands and the lug nuts are tight then it is the hub bearings. if you go get your car align they should be able to put new ones on for a decent price. i had my car slammed on coilovers and a pothole started makin mine do that and they just put new wheel bearings on it and it was fine

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

When wheel bearings go out, 95% of the time they will give off sort of a "humming" or low growl noise when you're driving. Thoroughly check out the suspension/alignment parts, and if all else fails, replace the wheel bearing. It never hurts to have a new one in

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

Most modern bearings don't develope any real slop when they wear. They will make noise, and sometimes you can feel a grinding while rotating by hand. In my experience, it's not like the good old days when bearings got real loose.

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

Hey just to let you guys know my eclipse was great i could get her up yo 120 on the highway. the other day i was doing about 30 on some back roads when it jumped and suddenly started pulling to the right. well she lost a balljoint and the wheel jamed under the body, skidding over 80 feet. I got lucky i was about 5" from the curb and 1' foot from a telephone pole. After it happened i did reserch and found it to be defective. The ins. co. said its 1200 dollars to fix all the broken parts on the one side. If I get it done ill do both sides. I love that car but i cant look at it the same way.She only had 94,000 miles. Do your suspension work first.

Thats very... interesting...

Sounds like you should be driving a little more carefully, but thats just my opinion...

Re: front left wheel wierd movement...

Doesn't matter how you drive if you lose one of these balljoints, or have a Tcase lock up. People have been killed by these things. Get these recalls done! Or at least get the parts and fix it yourself in the case of the Tcase recall.
