Angry 94 Bonneville Problems

Hey everyone - I just found this site, so I thought I'd ask some advice from you. I'm having two major problems with my 94 Bonneville. First, my car seems to stall a lot. It's usually when I'm pulling up to a stop and I let go of the gas. Also, pushing the brakes usually makes it worse, while pushing the gas sometimes makes it better. To fix the problem, I just shift into neutral, turn the key back, and then turn it on again. The car usually starts back up, and I'm fine. I've become quite good at this, but it's pretty annoying, and I want to get it fixed. Second, my car seems to shift late at higher speeds. Usually after I drive at 70 mph for a little while, my car kinda jumps, and my RPMs go up to 3000 (from a usual 2200). Then, when this happens, my cruise won't work. (If I'm using cruise when it jumps, it kicks the cruise off.)

I don't know what to do. I've taken the car into two different shops (paid mucho bucks for those times) and I've had it checked out by two friends of mine who worked as mechanics and have their own diagnostic checkers. Please help - the car is really making me mad, but I just bought a house, so I can't buy a new car...

Re: 94 Bonneville Problems

Stalling problem - Well My 94 engine would quit or stop whenever it felt like it. Not to often but once in a while. I would pull over to the side of the road, restart and all is ok. Once in a while, it wouldn't start, just the click of the starter. Even though I just drove it to the location.

Replaced the ignition module (under the coils) and the quitting seemed to stop. Hasn't done it in a few weeks. When I replaced it I also cleaned all the contacts on the coils and the main harness connection. Actually I had a similar problem on a 77 Ford many years ago and it was the module also.

The starting problem. To make the car start I would wiggle the positive connection to the battery. Now it shouldn't wiggle but somehow after a couple weeks it would start to wiggle no matter how tight I made it. I replaced the positive screw (its longer than the negative version) but only after checking replacement positive battery screws in different stores. They had different shapes. I one I have now does not loosen up. Figure that one out.

Of course I did them both at the same time so I don't know which might have been the cause.

Hope that helps a little.

Re: 94 Bonneville Problems

IF your car stalls as you come to stop similar to a stick shift when you don't push the clutch in, you have a bad TCC solenoid (it controls torque converter lock-up). This would also be the cause of the RPM fluctuation at highway speed. Also check the vacuum line that goes to the transmission modulator valve. If cracked, it will cause strange shifting and stalling. A severely overdue tune-up could also be a cause, but less likely.
