If it were just a noise when turning the wheel, sort of a tack-tack-tack, it might be the upper strut mounts and bearings. You can check this easily by having a friend idle the car while you remove the two rubber caps at the top, put your finger(s) on the bearings, and have your friend turn the wheel back and forth. You might feel the bearings sort of popping in parallel with the noise. I have that condition on my 96, was quoted $300 for parts and labor, and was told it's just a gradual deteroration, like a clutch or brakes, highly unlikely to be any sudden failure.
With the bump in the road, I can't guess. I can tell you, though, I just had an event where I hit a small bump, the steering wheel suddenly wanted to be cocked 45 degrees left to go straight, and it turned out to be a failed control arm and sway bar link. See:
