Re: installing a tach on 2000 neon

It would be easier to install a cluster that already has the tachometer in it.

Re: installing a tach on 2000 neon

because he likes the big tach in the middle of his dash.
its not my thing but alot of people like it. as apposed to having one on the cluster. hell i know alot of people who have even tho they have one on the cluster.

ok most tachs come with 4 wires.
1 wire is for your constant
1 wire is for your ground
1 wire is for your backlight
1 wire is for tach signal

constant wire goes to a power supply that only comes on when you turn the car on. usually a fuse in the fuse box is used.

ground goes to a ground

backlight wire goes to the wire that illuminates your cluster when you turn on your headlights.

and tach signal wire goes to the tach signal wire.
if this was a first gen i could tell you what wires you needed to tap
sinse its not your gonna have to get a haynes or find it on the internet somewhere.

Re: installing a tach on 2000 neon

You will need a tach adapter. You may need to do a search on the Forums, I've seen this subject discussed before. There isn't a signal that you can just "tap" into on the neon ignition, there is no distributer. I think it is MSD that makes an adapter to read the signals going to the coils and translate them to a standard Tach signal. Even though there is a Tach signal going to the wiring harness that connects to your present cluster, you can't use it because it is a proprietory digital signal specifically for the factory cluster.

I have a 5" Autometer Monster Tach I would sell you if you are interested. It came on the car I just bought, but it's coming off as soon as I get some time. I'd rather have the tach in the cluster.

I live in Houston, TX. Say $65 plus shipping and you will need an adapter with the Autometer. Sunpro Powerline model that works without the adaptor.

I have that tach on my car and it does need the adapter to run properly. neons tach signal are ~2-3V and most tachs work with a square signal of 12V. the autometer tach is very good and it might work (mine did) without the sift light, yet the only reason to put that monster tach is to have that shift light, so go for the adapter and save time and headaches.
