Hey everybody. I need some insight with the following. My 323i seems to make a humming noise when coasting around 40-50 km/h. There is also some vibration that can be felt through the floor, although it isn't serious. What could this be? Transmission problem, differential, or tire noise (I have 225/50zr16)? Thanks for replying.

I have very similar problem, here is some history:
I bought certified 1999 323i 2 months ago. I noticed high whine coming from the rear at highway speeds. After doing some research I found that there is a BMW TSB (I assume then it must be a know issue) on this problem. After back and forth with the dealer, they replaced the rear differential. The good news is that the high whine is gone, the bad news is that I still have the noise you describe, I can only describe it like a noise from winter tires. The dealer also tells me that it's tires, I don't accept it. They changed tires and the noise is still there. I am still wrangling with the dealer. |
