Mid Grade Gas in an Acura 3.2TL Type S?
Just bought a 2002 Type S for my daughter. It has 50K miles on it, and she's driven it for two days now. I'm just wondering if she can use mid grade gas with that engine and not hurt anything. I've heard that the Lexus and Infinity engines sense pre-ignition and other problems and the built-in computer detunes the engine so it can run on mid grade gas. Is the same true for the Acura?
Thanks. |

Re: Mid Grade Gas in an Acura 3.2TL Type S?
On a Type-S, the engine computer can compensate (retard timing) for the lower octane (depending on load, altitude, etc.) and you may not hear any pinging. However, the Type-S runs very high compression and so it'll be prone to pinging with lower octane fuel. Many Type-S owners who've tried lower octane fuel also report reduced fuel mileage and less power. If conditions are bad and the pinging severe, engine damage will occur.
Bottom line: The engine is designed to run on high octane fuel so it'll run best on high octane fuel. |

Re: Mid Grade Gas in an Acura 3.2TL Type S?
With an engine w/ High Compression, its key to use 91 or higher octane, Not only is the computer designed to run on that higher octane, the gas has higher resistance to detonation for the higher compression of the engine you probably dont notice any powerloss or even mpg reduction/gain because going from 87 to 89 wouldn't change too much, try 93 and you'll notice a diffrence. Gas prices are extremely high, but i wouldn't short change my car on good gas to save me 10bucks in my wallet.
