'96 Grand Am - occassional stalling
Hello. I have a '96 Grand Am SE w/ 2.4L engine. Recently I've encountered stalling problems with the vehicle a couple of times.
The first time I was driving in stop-and-go traffic, going no faster than 25 mph when I was actually moving. The temperature gauge got a bit warm, about 3/4 of the way up, but still quite aways from the danger zone. It sort of sputtered on me, it sounded like it was trying to keep running but couldn't for some reason, then died. It started right back up, then started doing the same exact thing one minute later. I was able to get it into a parking lot before it died again the second time. I let it sit for awhile, then started it up and drove home without any problems (about a half-hour drive). Didn't have any more problems for almost a week. Last night it happened again, started dying on me in a parking lot/ally while I was looking for a parking spot. It didn't completely stall...it was barely hanging on...engine sounded like it was barely turning over, but it kept going enough to keep it from dying all the way. When it happened I tried giving it more gas (1-hoping the engine would turn over better, 2-to get the car to move, because even though it wasn't completely stalled, the car would barely move).
Am I looking at a fuel supply issue here? Fuel pump perhaps? Or could this be caused by something else? I replaced the pre-cat oxygen sensor a couple of days ago (after this problem happened the first time, before it happened the second time). I've had a P0141 (I think) code for awhile too...the one for the post-cat oxygen sensor. Planning on replacing that this weekend. Could that be related to the stalling problem?
