Exclamation 83 S10 ext no power have to floor it to accrelate

ok i have an 84 chevy s-10 ext cab, help it starts great no prob idling, however when driving in any gear high rpms low accerlation takes 1/4 to get up to 45 mph if i'm lucky, and incline of any sort slows down to like 1/2 the speed if not less, most of the time i have to get in the slow lane, also i'm burning alot of gas i go 40 miles and it eats 1/2 tank of gas, i smell gas when driving too but don't see leaks. also i feel a very slight surdge when driving. has new tranny in it. it's a 2.8l v6 has approx 203k miles on it and it's from canada model. please help!

Sounds to me like maybe a clogged cat. Start it and have someone give it some gas while idling and put your hand over the exhuast pipe. See if you can feel more pressure when the rpms are higher. And i have heard banging on the cat while someone is revving the engine will blow out a lot of the carbon build up. Use a rubber mallot, You dont want to destroy it. Just a idea...Lets see what the AF pro's think.
GOODLUCK

Welcome to AF Angelman.

Just a note to everyone replying, this'll be a carburated model.

I've seen plugged PVC valves do the same thing as well. They're dirt cheap and located on the passanger side valve cover.

I think that a good tuneup will make your ride seem like new to you.
New
Spark Plugs
PVC valve
fuel filter (located in the carb, where the fuel line bolts in)
distributer cap, router, and ignition wires
If you don't have lkots of power at that point check the timing, and clean the EGR valve

Re: 83 S10 ext no power have to floor it to accrelate

The lifter noise is more likely just a small exhaust leak in the area. I've never heard a 2.8L with bad lifters.

With the exception of replacing the carb base that has that stupid grill (with just a new base gasket), and possibly replacing the exhaust with headers and high flow I wouldn't add any power improvers. If your motor is stock it's got the weakest bottom end

I'VE GOT AN 84 S10 BLAZER AND MY PCV IS ON THE DRIVER SIDE. IS THIS A QUIRK OF THE BLAZER? OR DID SOMEBODY SWITCH THE VALVE COVERS?
