4T65E questions
I have a 99 Bonneville SLE with 88000 miles.
Recently purchased so I don’t know the history on the car. The problems are as follows; *Vibration that can only be traced to the drive axles or transmission, unknown. *Hard hammering during moderate takeoff from dead stop, like the tires are slipping and jumping. Occasional, but I will not do a WOT takeoff, too scared. *Also occasional, Odd shifting, like it cannot make up its mind. I am not a fan of dropping $1000 plus at a shop just to have them spend an hour with my car when I can pull the tranny in 3 hours. Any Ideas on what this is? I am thinking of pulling it and rebuilding it, but if my problems are electrical I will be wasting my time. Mechanical doesn't scare me, electrical does. Anyone had and fixed a simular problem? |

Re: 4T65E questions
I have a 95 that had a similar problem. It turned out to be the differential, one of the little sandwich bearings... two pieces of stamped metal that slide relative to each other shaped like a cookie had bit the dust and took out other hard parts.... Even though it was all in the differential I had intermitment wierd shifting. I could find the issue before pulling the tranny by removing the R.F. Drive shaft and the small housing on that side of the transaxle.
good luck |

Re: 4T65E questions
Before getting into anything mechanical on the tranny, the best thing to do is get it scanned with a trans capable scanner and see if DTC error code P1811 shows up. The launch shudder and shifting problems are more valve body related like a flaky pressure control solenoid (PCS). The line pressure is not being controlled properly. There is a GM TSB out on this problem.

Based on some reading I have been doing I am inclined to think it is a PCS or stuck valve in the body. The GM TSB Shudder bulletin really nails the problem. Any Idea if an Acrton 9145 will read a tranny code? I also checked the fluid and it is a little over filled. I am going to do a filter change first and see if that fixes things. (I would guess not) Another question, anyone here rebuild one of these at home? I have done a few Turbo 400's myself and even helped with a 4L60E. I just don’t like dropping $1600 and not even being sure new parts were used. A rebuild kit is $160 and on *-Bay I can get most of the tools needed for under $200 lot. Thanks for everyone’s responses |

Re: 4T65E questions
It should read the tranny codes. Almost all OBD2 scanners will read tranny codes because the tranny can affect emissions. The Obd2 system must store codes for anything that could possibly affect emissions. So the code reader should read the tranny code.
The 4T65E isn't that hard to rebuild. If you can rebuild the 4T60E you should be able to rebuild the 65E. |

Re: 4T65E questions
I'd recommend getting a ATSG General Motors Techtran Manual for the 4T65E. You can get it for a reasonable cost on EBay. I've done a PCS solenoid replacement, TCC-PWM solenoid, valve body kit and removed the final drive housing to get to the differential in my garage. If you do a rebuild its a good idea to take a close look at the clutch packs especially the 4th clutch and the 4th spline.

The ATSG book is alreay in route. I only wish someone had a video out. Vids are great when they use a technical term that the layman cannot pickup. If I pull it all the clutches, steels and bands will be replaced. I read about the spline some place else. Also sounds like i need to look over the diff also. If anyone can think of anything else let me know. Whats the diff between a 4L60E and a 4T60E? transaxle VS Transmission? bnaylor3400, Thanks for your input |

Re: 4T65E questions
I rebuilt a 460TE, and it went very well with the shop, and ATSG manual. I paid a real GM mechanic to help me press out the clutch seals, and there was one SST that helped put the gears back in. 80000 miles so far and no trouble.
