are you refering to the MAF screen in the throttle body? if that is what your talking about leave it in place, it doesnt restrice flow that much but it makes the air flow straight over the MAF sensor, w/out it the car would not have the right air/fuel ratio(mostly noticable at WOT and it will hurt your acceleration)...it could be bad enough that the car will not idle right or you may not notice it unless you have a scaner and can monitor things like O2 readings and such.

No need to cut it out. Take a close look and you'll see its held in by a large internal C shaped snap-ring. Use snap ring pliers or needle nose pliers to remove it from the groove it is in. Then take a piece of fine gauge wire put a flat hook in the end, insert it in one of the holes and pull it out.

I took mine out ('97) and got a check engine light 2 days later. My scan tool read the code as a "lean condition". I'm not sure if it was a random event or if the mass air wires didn't read the intake are properly because of the screen being out. Anyway, I put it back in. My filter box is still gutted out and I use a reusable high flow filter though. It's got to flow a lot more air, especially with that red plastic restriction gone, the filter and the inlet smoothed out.

Re: Can I cut the the wire/strainer material our from the part that sucks air? read p

yea ok, im not going to cut it out then just lookin to get as much air as possible. a while ago I bought a flexable tube and shoved it in the hole under the airbox that goes into the fender well and I put a filter in there so it was sucking cold air but still I was thinking that I could get more air so I put the air box back on with the rubber tube so I had a gutted air box, so I was thinking of a way to make a double air intake so I took the fexable tube and pluged it where the cup thing is under the rubber tube so now its sucking from a round k@n filter and the panel filter so its really gettin air now

Re: Can I cut the the wire/strainer material our from the part that sucks air? read plz..

a good CAI has very little bends, smoth on the inside pipes and suck air from the coldest possible place, which on our cars if the fender below the stock air box. if i were you i would go to lowes/homedepot and buy some 3" pvc pipes, bends, and sleeves (sp) to attach it to the intake. and make a FWI its the best you can do w/out having someone custom weld you an intake. the 2'nd hose off the intake is something i havent thought of but i dont see it helping add more air since the air has to enter it and then make a sharp turn, it loses the "high flow" and it creates more turbulence. the FWI requires you to make the fender hole a little bigger IIRC so if that bothers you, you can just replace the factory tube with smoth/less bend pvc and make your own heat shield where the factory box is.

the stock black tube wont reach the fender and the other tube in the pic is way to small and restrictive. unless you get some more pipes i would just gut the stock air box and remove the pieces under the box.(take out the red and gray pieces) and keep a clean paper or k&n filter in the box.

that way you wont have to drill a hole in the tube to find a spot for the IAT sensor. there was a write up on how to custom make a intake but i cant find it right now
