Re: Problems with my 99 4runner trunk door
I have also recently started having problems with the trunk door on my 99 4Runner. Seems like a mechanism in the trunk lock is getting stuck. Sometimes when I open the trunk, the handle gets stuck and I am unable to close and lock the trunk (the latch doesn't catch). I played with the lock mechanism at one point by turning the key in the trunk lock - when I heard a "click" sound, I thought the problem was solved, so I shut the trunk. This time it shut and was locked, but now I couldn't get it open. I also thought I would have to rip off the door (which I almost did).
I still haven't solved the problem completely (which is why I am searching the forums), but I have noticed a few things that are temporary workarounds that may help out:
1) although playing with the lock/unlock on the keyless entry doesn't seem to do much (even pushing unlock twice, which typically unlocks the trunk), when I play with the lock/unlock switch on the front doors, it pops out the handle of the trunk and seems to work in unlocking the trunk. This allows me to open the trunk, although the handle usually gets stuck again and I am back to square one.
2) Putting the car into drive or reverse locks everything, and then putting it back into park unlocks everthing, and has also worked on resetting the trunk mechanism. You may actually have to move the car a short distance to get this to work.
3) For now, I have resorted to rolling the rear window up and down when I need to get into the trunk.
Although these workarounds are OK for the time being, I am interested in finding a permanent solution, so if anyone knows of anything I am all ears. We called around and described the problems to a few mechanics (one a Toyota Dealer and the other a 4Runner specialist), and although they were not familiar with the problem, they each came up with an estimate around $100 to look at it.
