Turbo Experts

Ok you guys are my turbo experts and I need some help with an app outside of a Mitsubishi engine. I'm installing a mitsu turbo from a gst or vr-4 on a d series honda engine. I want to run about 8-10 psi. I know I need an intake manifold, exaust manifold, inter-cooler, oil lines, new high flow fuel pump and injectors, and the turbo (of course). I'm also installing a turbo timer, boost gauge, a/f meter, and an engine management system. Would an FMIC be too much, have I missed anything, is there anything I shold know that would make the install easier, and is there a way to control the wastegate on the turbo. Thanks again for the help guys. I can't express my appriciation for the help you've given me in the past and how much your input on this will mean to me. If there is anything you need to know I'll do my best to answer your ?'s.

Re: Turbo Experts

Don't forget that you will also need a blow off valve and a boost controller to manage your boost levels.

Re: Turbo Experts

Should I Replace my radiator to ensure better cooling for the turbo seeing as how it's going to need coolant lines?

Re: Turbo Experts

You have all your parts? I have a few things laying around that I could probably sell.. 1g sidemount intercooler,1g upper intercooler HOSE with the 1g BOV flange of course,1g throttle body elbow, 1g lower intercooler HOSE, 1g exhaust manifold, 1g o2 housing, 2g exhaust manifold, 13g turbo, 14b turbo(that needs new bearings!) and probably a few other things laying around.. If you would want any of this stuff, I'm sure we could work out something. Good luck.

Re: Turbo Experts

No offense, but why are you turboing a D series? Swaps seem so cheap and easy coming from my Honda friend, I'd drop in a B16 before you worry about turboing it.

Re: Turbo Experts

swaps are easy but the motors are kind of pricy. I know a guy from Owatonna thats running a turbo d16y5 and hes making 290hp to the wheels so I guess its not a bad motor

You also won't need a turbo timer on a stock mitsu turbo. Unless you want one just for shits and giggles.

Really? I read in a tuner mag that a B16 can be had for around $500. But I'm not sure how much one really is.

Re: Turbo Experts

When they say 500 that's if your lucky enough to have the cash available to get it before someone else and that's only the motor. Swapping isn't as easy with a Honda as it is with some other cars. Not only to you need to swap motor mounts and small parts but you also have to swap ecu's, harnesses and a crap load of other things especially with the VTEC engines. I won't say it's as hard as swapping to a 4G63 from a 420a but its close. I think the biggest difference is that there are many companies that make kits to do the swaps. I didn't post in the Honda section because it's all the same crap over and over and no one is really into using the mitsu turbo's. "Oh your going to go turbo?! You need a Garret T66 pushing 20+ PSI!" Screw that. I don't want a drag car. I want a little more power than 102 hp at the fly. If I wouldn't have asked you guys I wouldn't have know that I needed the coolant lines. I haven't seen that on any of the Honda sites or any of the Honda forums. The D series is a good low compression engine that will hold well to a turbo pushing small boost. I just want to get into the 200-230 hp range at the wheel. My trans can handle 300.
I also thought that the turbo would have a longer life if you used a turbo timer. Is that only on heavier applications? And for the boost controller, wouldn't the wastegate work just fine or is the controller used to control the wastegate. (This is why you guys are my turbo experts.)

Re: Turbo Experts

Turbo times are good but not required, and a boost controller controlls the wastegate yes.

I would get a turbo timer, it will keep your turbo in good shape. Big, small, cheap, or expensive, I still think its a good investment. Plus I like the digital RPM guage on there.

If you are just going to run the waste gate boost, you should be fine without a boost controller, but you are screwed if you want to turn up the boost. I see what you mean about the D series, I assumed that you were making a balls out track car. If all you want is a little extra power, more power to you. What turbo are you planning on? Good luck man.
