How's the snow (for snowboarding)? What's winter like in Oz and NZ.

Both major North Island fields(Whakapapa,Turoa)closed due to extreme weather-should be awesome when it clears.....main roads into the area are closed tonight.

South island fields.......check out this site, they're too far away for me to worry about.

http://www.snowreports.co.nz/

Winter in NZ depends enormously on height above sea level an latitude....the 'winterless North' is far more temperate than the 'Deep South'.
Here in the shadow of Mount Taranaki, the mountain itself gets lots of snow at this time of year, but because we get warm low level onshore winds from the Pacific,it seldom snows at sea level.

Extreme winter.....

Average summer

Thanks for the info.

Which ski resorts would you recommend? I snowboard, btw. Which resorts have the best snow and parks?

The south has consistently better snow, much better snow-making facilities, and a wider choice of fields. If you look at basing yourself in Queenstown,

http://www.queenstownwinter.com/

You have an awesome range of skifields, plus unlimited 'extreme' activities i.e. jetboating ,bungy,paragliding.....tHE NIGHTLIFE is pretty full-on too.

Make no mistake ,Queenstown is the winter destination in NZ.

TOO BAD MOST OF THE KIWIS LIVE IN AUCKLAND!

Wow. Bungie jumping in the winter?

What's so bad about Auckland? Closer to South Island than Seattle.

If you want to snowboard definitely hit the South Island ski fields - the North Island ones have hard packed snow, which sucks, but its the best we got.

So I am looking at the Queenstown website and I have a question. So Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort, and The Remarkables are all part of Queenstown? If I buy a Cardrona pass, will it work at the Remarkables as well? The website doesn't mentioned it and sounds like they're separate.

Queenstown is the resort base for all of these fields.

When are you planning on coning over?

Yeah, but not this year. I'm thinking of visiting NZ and Oz next year. But I'm not sure which season. I wanna go during your winter for the snow, but I'm not sure about the sites during that season. Your summer sounds cool too. Ahh, decisions decisions.

Sounds like whoever founded the city wasn't fond of snow. A nudist, perhaps?

Speaking of snow in Oz.......Where the hell does it all go????

Oh and you won't find a better Snowboarding place than Queenstown, I was kinda pissed I didn't get to go down in the Winter break like I normally do also there are heaps of tourists to meet and talk to.....
and of course a nightlife second only to Wellington-city (Which is WAY far from any snow-fields, don't bother there
