Question 99 SL1 RPM and coolant needles

Please help me solving the following problem in Saturn car :

Sometimes, When the car is in Park mode, especially during warmup, RPM needle fluctuates and Coolant needle doesn't show any change. At this time if I start driving, RPM needle shows more reading and coolant needle shows very less reading (about 5%). RPM needle returns to normal when coolant needle rises suddenly to about 25%.

Re: 99 SL1 RPM and coolant needles

define suddenly

if suddenly means less then 5 seconds from no reading to 1/4 temp then possible bad ECT and connectior

if suddenly means in the span of about one minute from no reading to 1/4 temp then this is normal operation.

Re: 99 SL1 RPM and coolant needles

it can jump like that. it may not be all to warm where its at, but then when the thermostat opens, then the rush of coolant can make it jump. not common on our cars really since its sitting in the warm spots.

now where does the coolant gauge stay WHILE DRIVING. if its at 1/4 mark, ects is bad, if its between 1/4-1/2 while driving its good. how has your gas mileage been lately?
