Smoke in the cab...yeah....

I have a 93(?) Kia with some wierd problems. Every once in awhile, it will overheat and a little bit of smoke starts coming out of the heater vents. All of this is accompanied with some nasty shaking and bucking and crap for acceleration. I usually take it into a shop where they tune it, whatever that means for them. I am tired ( ) of this problem and am curios as to what the heck it is.
