4wd question

Hi, i have a 1995.5 honda passport v6 4wd and i have a question about the 4 wheel drive system. My 4wd is not the one witht he shift on fly feature, i have to stop, shift it into 4wd then go. So here is my question. Can i back up in 4wd mode. I try doing that and it felt kind of weird, my car will hesitate and i will heard some clucking noise or some sort from the front wheel..So is it okay to back up in 4WD mode?? thanks

Re: 4wd question

Do you have auto or manual locking hubs?

Re: 4wd question

i have auto locking hub i believe. All i have to do is put the lever in 4wd and move forward, then it will lock, then i need to back up to unlock it.

Re: 4wd question

Auto lock hubs can disengage when you go in reverse. I'm not sure of the details (I have drive flanges which I replaced with manual lock hubs), but I know you can leave it in 4wd and not have mechanical probs. You can replace them with manual lock hubs for about 100 dollars and an hour of easy work, which will give you a 100% lock or unlock all the time.

Re: 4wd question

Hi jyguy.

That sound you are describing is a normal sound for my 1994 Honda Passport. It has done it since I bought it brand new and I even took it back to the dealer and all checked out ok. They said it was the sound of the hub locking.
