Fitting a 2G bumper onto a 1G

I was wondering if anyone has ever thought of trying, or tried this, before. I want to fit a second generation stock front bumper cover (from a 1997 GT) onto my 1993 SL. I do realize a lot of hacking will be involved, but I tihnk the pop-ups will look really sexy with a 2G stock kit. What do you guys think? Can any photochop this?

Re: Fitting a 2G bumper onto a 1G

im gonna say its not possible unless you wanna cut off the whole upper part of the 2nd gen (everything above the very bottom of the lights) and swap that out for the same portion of the 1st gen. Even then though, im not sure on how it would mount up. You will probably need to make some custom brackets or steal parts off a 2nd gen.....idk man.

another thought, even if you were to do it, you would prolly need massive fiberglas work to make the upper and lower halves "mesh"

Re: Fitting a 2G bumper onto a 1G

the headlights of the 1st and second gens are shaped differently, so you would be better off using 2nd gen lights with a 2nd gen bumper, which then you would have to get a 2nd gen hood on top of that. If your gonna do all that, you might as well go for the 99 conversion. So its probably not worth the trouble unless your looking to convert to a second gen body

With the second gen bumper it would have issues with the lights, if you change out the lights you need to change out the hood and either mock the mounting up or change the radiator support. If you can find a second gen donor it wouldnt be too bad other than the cutting and welding.

I realize that this 3SI post isn't exactly the same thing, but it should give you an idea of what you need to do.

Re: Fitting a 2G bumper onto a 1G

Guys, the whole idea was to try to fit a 97 shape bumper to work with the pop-ups. As I said before, the hacking and trimming and custom fabrication involved will be insane, but it'll be worth the look. I'm gonna give it a shot sooner or later.
