Foam on the dipstick...
Hi, On my 89 calai with the quad 4, 2.3 ,that has 97,000 miles I have noticed white foam on the dipstick when checking my oil, Its not much just a little. When I drain my oil there doesnt seem to be any foam in the oil, nor does it seperate after I put it in a clear container and let it sit. Yes I am losing coolant but I think I have a leak somewhere ( Not thinking head gasket). Anyone know where this water is coming from? I am not familiar with this car yet, as I am getting newly aquainted with this new friend that I have. For the heck of it I just sent out an oil sample to see If I can get an indication of what is going on inside. Also for the heck of it I just changed the oil/water seperator ( It was a hell of a time finding this gizmo) and I found that the inside of it was rattling as I think there may have been a bulid up of ice inside (not sure) as I live in central ny (frigid temps). Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Tom

Re: Foam on the dipstick...
The foam is normal. It is caused by condensation in the crankcase on these cold days. If you drive the car at least 12 miles or 30 minutes it usually burns off and you won't see the white stuff but if you only make short trips it is likely going to happen. Don't worry about it unless the oil turns milky otherwise just change the oil frequently and keep on driving.
