The dirtiest gas comes from Esso, followed by Shell, Petro Canada and Sunoco.

The 'dirt' is relative to the amount of dissolved sulphur in ppm; Esso is the highest at about 700 to 800 ppm.

Canadian Tire buys all its gas from Esso.

Hasn't been a Texaco in Canada (at least in Ontario) for some time.

A number of independents also purchase gas from Esso and Shell.

The cleanest gas in Ontario is Sunoco in part due to the refining process and the addition of ethanol (about 10%) to the refined gas.

The cleanest gas by far is in western Canada where even Esso is a little cleaner.

Has something to do with the refining process and the crude oil used to refine the gasoline, I think.

Guess you can add this to the "I didn't know that department!"

.

Re: Canadians: Which gas brand do you use?

Esso gas has a strange smell, for sure.

IMHO Sunoco is the best.

My car that takes regular seems to run the same regardless of brand. But my high compression stuff works best on Sunoco premium.
Shell premium is better than the others except for Sunoco.
All the other premiums make my cars rattle and ping like 8 lug nuts in a coffee can.

I used Petro Can until I moved to N.S in '02. There was a Shell stn. close by so I bought gas there. Now I find out those two brands are why the gas guage hasn't worked in three years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can try running STP fuel injector cleaner frequently (4 - 350ml bottles in a month) to see if it will clean the sulphur deposits off of the contacts in the sending unit.

Happened to me too coming back from Vancouver in 2002 after filling with Shell. Gas gauge didn't work for over 1000 miles. Ran three of those big bottles of Canadian Tire fuel injector cleaner through it for about six tank fill-ups. The gauge started to work, although I'm not sure if it has been at all accurate since.

GM Canada offered its Montana owners a free oil change and 20 dollar gas card from Petro Canada about 2 or 3 years ago. Seems Petro put something in the fuel to deal with the sulphur problem.

I use Petro and Sunoco but never Esso as my dad told me when I was young that Esso has dirty gas and it's stuck with me ever since.

Either Chevron or Mohawk/Husky which is an independant. The Mohawk/Husky 'regular' is 10% ethanol and is 90 octane. The Van runs great on it, but also does fine with the Chevron stuff. I never fill at Esso, Petrocan or Shell.

Re: Canadians: Which gas brand do you use?

I use Sunoco just because it feels like the car runs cleaner. I rarely use petro can, my parents use it since they get you 2cents off per L if you have a ptrocan credit card (forgot the bank). So its a pretty cool deal. however Sunoco is always 1 cent cheaper so it comes up to about 1 cent cheaper per L to use Petro can. I just stick to sunoco. Plus i run a lot of R/c gas cars so i always buy super 94 only at sunoco to get the most octane out of them.
