Bad vibrations

Hey all,

I have a 65 coupe with a C4 transmission. I'm getting a horrible vibration when the car is in gear and stopped and what sounds like a grinding noise. This seems to stop when the car is in nuetral. The vibration continues in a rythmic fashion when going forward and increases with speed. Checked underneath the car and everything looks o.k.. Could it be something inside the transmission? What inside the tranny could be causing this? Thanks for any help.
