89 Camry. 4-cyl. new Dizzy.. still no start
I still need help in getting car going.
89 Camry, 4-cyl., 3S-FE Original problem was.. electrical fire in Dizzy due to oil leak through o-ring. I replaced Dizzy with Junkyard piece but it turned out bad. I've now replaced it with 'new' one from Autozone. I replaced timming belt, because it jumped a couple of teeth and have place cam/Crank on timming marks based on Haynes procedures.. The car still does not start.. The car just cranks. I used a spark tester and the spark is good and strong, however, I can tell that the fuel pump is not engaging.. I tested the pump using jumper wire and it pressurized. any suggestions on what to check next? How do I troubleshoot the reason for fuel pump not turning on? Thanks in advance for the help guys.. aRt |

Re: 89 Camry. 4-cyl. new Dizzy.. still no start
To varify that the pump is the problem, you can remove the hose leading to the throttle body and spray a bit of carb cleaner in there. Now reattach the hose and try to start the car. If you now get some sputtering, you have varified that you have a fuel delivery problem. I would then check the fuel pump relay. There should be some test procedure in the manual. If you have an identical relay in the fuse and/or relay box to some non-esential component, you could try swapping that out for a test and then try starting the car. If the car now starts, you have varidied that the fuel pump relay is the problem.

aRt, Don't know if this helps but long ago my friend had the same problem with his Corolla wagon. he finally found out the "igniter" went bad. Now this problem never happened to my 89 Camary but you might look into that issue. Otherwise I'd just tow it to Toyota and hasve then deal with it. All it takes is money. rimfire,22 |

Re: 89 Camry. 4-cyl. new Dizzy.. still no start
If the pump isn't the problem I would go back to timing. Ya, I hate to listen to second guessers too but, I've just got that feeling. You changed two major components that effect timing in the timing belt and the distributor. It wouldn't take much to misset the timing enough to keep it from starting. Make sure when the timing marks are lined up at the timing belt, the rotor at the distributor is pointing at the #1 plug wire. Cheers!

I'll go back to recheck timming marks and also try starter spray in the TB..
I'll follow up guys... thanks for the suggestions so far. |
