Jetta 2001 Check engine light code 1296

This is my Daughter-IN-Laws car and she had her uncle read the code and he told her the code was 1296 some sort of computer problem and mentioned something about a recall? Does anyone know what this code means? Beside the check engine light coming back on when you drive over 30mph the trunk open light stays on? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

replace the trunk latch and microswitch.
as for the code...

Cooling system malfunction

if its a 2.0 start with replacing the ect (coolant temp sensor) very common problem.

also let the car warm up to full operating temp and check if the fans come on.
