Tachometer shift light

Hey iwas wondering if you were to buy a tachometer with a shift light (mainly like the ones the sell on ebay....kind of expensive) does that tell you the best time that you should shift... or a good time or basically gives you a warning and stuff... not really sure until i saw one in that racing movie "The Last Race" which was kinda cool, lol kinda random but your help would be great thanks alot....and also how would you install one of these (what do u have to hook it up to and is it hard)

Re: Tachometer shift light

you set it to a RPM and it flashes at that rpm

I set mine just before my shift point, so when I see it I shift right at the point I want to shift at.

Re: Tachometer shift light

Well, some people think it's best to redline first and then shift on the peak hp point after that. Others do it differently. You would set it probably near or on your peak hp in the powerband.

Re: Tachometer shift light

My car gets it peak hp at 6,400 rpm's and redlines at 7,000 rpm's. However, mine is the DOHC. If you were to get a SOHC it would be more like 5,500 rpm's. I wouldn't reccomend getting a SOHC if you are thinking about buying a 3kgt. They don't have near the hp of a DOHC.

Edit: If I were to buy a shift light I would set it at about 6,200 rpm's so I would have reaction time to shift. You will have to test and find out which shift points work best for your car.

Ha, no that's alright. You can get a SOHC, DOHC, and a DOHC TT (Double overhead cam twin turbo). But do us a favor and wait till your older to get a VR4 (DOHC TT). For many reasons. It's like giving a young kid the keys to a C5 Corvette. This may sound fun but believe me, you'll have an outsatanding fine within a week or you'll have totaled it within a month. No offense to you its just you don't have the experience. Get an SL or base model. They are great looking and still are competable with mid 90's Mustang GT's. Check out the Mitsubishi-3kgt/stealth forum and go to the article titled "If you are thinking about buying a VR4 read this first". If you have any questions about 3kgt's or Stealths feel free to ask in that forum.

Edit: SOHC = single overhead cam DOHC= double overhead cam

Re: Tachometer shift light

i sure wouldn't mind...i was going to ask the same thing....but i wouldn't even have him start in a 3kgt...id have him start in a low powered manual since thats the route he wants to go...preferably a tercel, tempo, old accords and corollas, basiclly so u can ruin the clutch learning and not really have to worry if u hit anything learning it since the car isn't worth much.

but learning to drive on a low powered car does have its benefits since you will get experience and learn what the powerband is all about in a lesser powered car, so u will actually see where it is...thats how i learned...planning on sellin the auto tho and go back to manual...

i guess u notice more things when you start on a low powered car, then switch to a big upgrade...
