How do they get the horsepower numbers?

I remeber seeing an ad for a GT-40 crate engine, complete with everything except for intake and carb or fuel injection system. It was rated at 345hp. How do they get that number? Is that with just dropping in the crate engine and adding stock intake, injetors, throttle body, mass air, etc.? Or is that with upgrading those parts aswell? Cause if I'm spending the money for a crate engine, I'm sure as hell going to spend some more to get the other parts to compliment the crate engine. I'm sure the stock 5.0 intake and stuff would be OK, but to me it seems like a waste to do that. It's kind of like having a NASCAR engine then putting a 2 barrel carb on it.

Just wondering how they get that 345hp number. THANK YOU

Re: How do they get the horsepower numbers?

Those numbers are from adding upgraded parts i think. I assume they test different size carbs with different intake and setups to produce the best #s. Only reason i say this is because i've seen on adds where they have an asteric which sais somethin like: #s listed were produced with a Holley 750 with high-rise so-and-so intake. Don't know about fuel injection stuff with all there added goodies. Good question. Call Jegs or Summit; they would know, cause they both sell this motor i think.

Not to be a smartass but, I guessed that because they're selling an engine, not a whole car. But still, 345hp at the flywheel is damn good. Put that in with a 5spd. and at the wheels you'd probably have AROUND 300hp. That's fine with me. Hell, the most I ever had at the flywheel was around 280hp with just the basic bolt-ons. So 345hp just from the engine to me would be great!!

I know the thing in the past 10 years is to messure the power at the wheels but, I still rather hear the hp/tq #'s at the flywheel. Probably because I like to hear the higher numbers.
