Sort-of Complete: Formula Firebird WS6

This is another build for a buddy, his Formula Firebird, "The Rocket," which competes in SCCA Solo I and has competed in two One Lap of Americas. He even got a pic in Popular Hot Rodding:

I listed it as sort-of complete because I also want to do the decals he ran in the picture above, but I'm waiting on printer repairs before I can make them ... Until then, here's the mostly-finished car, done with the same colour as the real-life one, Dupli-color GM Bright Red with Anthracite Gray interior. He has a LOT of modifications, but they're all done to keep it stock appearing, which is why it basically looks like a stock Firebird

Ya, I didn't even notice the difference in the foglights until I looked at that pic

Actually, that's the V8 exhaust. See Revell made the mistake of using the Formula-only single 3" exhaust (flows as good as dual 2.25"), which was only available 1-2 years, and not offering us the optional dual exhaust in the kit.

I used the muffler-back from a Corvette for this build, since he has dual tips.

Actually all the 98 Trans Am WS6 and Camaro SS's had single exit exhaust. In 99 the "detuned" version came out with the dual exit exhuast.

This is a Formula. I was told the single exhaust was Formula only, which would explain why the kit has it... I've never seen a '98 Z28 or SS with single... *shrug*

Re: Sort-of Complete: Formula Firebird WS6

Are there any other inaccuracies in this kit? Also, is this done in that crappy white plastic that crazes? Or is this stuff better?

Great work, going to be a nice tribute to the 1:1 version. That engine bay looks great!

If you mean the plastic that the new Vette and such is made out of, I don't think so. It's a fairly old kit (was recently re-released with the new Musclecar lineup) and it's painted with duplicolor. And yes, it's inaccurate, just look at the pic ... the foglights are different than a Formula and the rear wing is too tall. Oh well...

Re: Sort-of Complete: Formula Firebird WS6

I think there may be some confusion here. Revell`s model is of a Firebird WS-6 Trans Am. It is not a Formula. The Formula does have a different front end, but it also has a different rear deck lid and is missing the side skirts that run along the bottom of the car that the Trans am has (and the Revell kit has)..
Revell`s version is quite accurate, as far as the body is concerned. Here is a pic of a real 1

By the way, nice work!

Just for reference, here is a Firebird Formula WS-6 with arrows pointing to the differences:

Re: Sort-of Complete: Formula Firebird WS6

Understood. Revell really should've labelled it a Trans Am

Re: Sort-of Complete: Formula Firebird WS6

I think the body lines are pretty damn accurate. I have one sitting here and I can't find anything wrong with it other than the weird looking stock rims and plastic tires. Maybe the rear lights are a bit wadded. It might be a bit narrow, too.
