hey everyone whats up i have a quesiton about my 2002 grand am V6 automatic, i recently got rid of my cavalier and took the system that i installed in the cavalier and am trying tp put it in my grand am, the thng is when i remove the stock stereo theres a thick cable attached to the stock radio, not the harness its a single thick cable i wanted to know is this the theftlock cable and if disconnect it whatwould happen and when i tried removein the radio and when i put it back in my blinkers dont work any ideas about that one, all the information would help at all. thier are two buttons(hazzard, ETS) on the front cover around the radio. You probley forgot to hook the blinker cable back up.
On removing the radio, make sure the theftlock is disabled or the radio wont work(without the code) at all. Should tell you in your manual that came with the car how to turn it off.

oh my god your right dud ei totally forgot about those two switches wow i feel dumb, so i dont get how it works this code how do i put this code in or where and how, so confused.... sorry

You pick a four digit code, and you enter those numbers via the numeric buttons on the radio. Just make sure you write down that number, or else you'll have a locked radio if power is lost to it. Without that code entered, the words "LOC" appear and the radio will not turn on....until that code is entered correctly.
You might want to reference your owners manual because that Theftlock procedure must be followed precisely and within a 15 second timespan; or else you'll have to start all over again. You have 15 seconds to do it correctly.
I added the Theftlock on my radio, as I like that little red LED blinking on the radios' faceplate.... just a tad more level of secured / alarmed car.

yes the instructions are lengthy. If the little red light doesnt blink when the cars locked then it may already be turned off. I hav forgoten a few times and ended up with a useless radio, that works fine! Lol

I was lucky, because my neighbor gave me his radio to play around with... he was gonna throw it away because the light burnt out. Anyways, I tinkered with the light bulb and got it working again. So while I had the radio connected to a 12 volt power supply in my house, I fooled around to learn about how that Theftlock works.
So I entered a four digit code, then removed the power supply. I reconnected the power, and sure enough.... "LOC" was displayed; meaning Theftlock is activated and locked the radio.
So I went through the procedure to unlock it and it worked great. I tried it numerous times and it always worked flawless for me. I was able to lock / unlock it every time. So feeling comfortable, I added Theftlock to my car radio
as I like that bright red LED blinking on it. Just a wee bit more self-assurance...and that LED is quite noticeable too.

ok im sorry for all these quesiton but i looked in my manual and it doesnt say how to remove the theftlock or how to put in the code i would appreciate it if someone can give me a detailed description on how to remove the theftlock

That seems quite strange... It should definitely be in your owner's manual. My instructions in my owner's manual are for my 2000 GT1, and there is a very detailed section about Theftlock. I don't know anything about any other Grand Am years....

Jmoney3318, it should be in section 3 Comfort Controls and Audio Systems. If your LEDS not flashing on hte radio when the keys off, you dont need to do all this.

I dont hav the 02 manual, only a 99' so the directions could be different, but I doubt it, so heres what I hav;

~Activating the Theft-Deterrent~

Read through all 9 steps before you try this.
And it all has to be enterd in with in 15 seconds or you'll hav to start over(its easy)

1 write down any 3 or 4 digit # from 000 - 1999 and keep it in a safe place separate from the vehicle.

2 Turn the ignition key to ACC or On

3 Trun the radio Off

4 Press the 1 and 4 buttons together. Hold them down until --- shows on the display. Next you will use the secret code #'s you wrote down

5 Press MIN and 000 will appear on the display

6 Press MIN again to make the last two digits agree with your code #'s

7 Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree with your code

8 Press AM-FM after you hav confirmed that the code matches the secret code you wrote down. The display will show REP to let you know that you need to repeat Steps 5-7 to confim your secret Code

9 Press AM-FM and this time the display will show SEC to let you know that the radio is secure

Note: with igintio off the LED on the radio should flash indicating a secure radio.

To unlock Theft-Deterrant After a power loss

Enter your secret code as follows, dont pause more that 15 sec between steps.

1 LOC appears when the ignition is On

2Press MIN and 000 will appear on the display

3 Press MIN again to make the last two digits agree with your code

4 Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree with your code

5 Press AM-FM after you hav confirmed that the code matches your secret code. The display will show SEC indicating the radio is now operable and secure.

Note: If you enter the wrong code 8 times, INOP will apear on the display. You will hav to wait an hour with the ignitio key on before you can try it again. When you try it again you will only hav 3 more chances to enter the code before INOP apears.
If you lose or forget the code, contact your Dealer.

Now for Disabling the Theft Deterrent

Enter your code as follows with in 15 seconds as before

1 turn the ignition to ACC or ON
2 turn the radio Off
3 Press 1 and 4 buttons together. Hold down until SEC shows on the display
4 Press MIN and 000 will appear on the display
5 Press MIN again to make the last two digits agree with your code.
6 Press HR to make the first 1 or 2 digits agree with your code
7 Press AM-FM after you hav confirmed that the code matches your code. This will show in hte display --- indicating the radios no laonger secured.

If the codes enters incorrectly SEC will apear on the radio display.
When the battery powers lost and then when restored, the radio wont turn on and LOC will appear on the display.

Wow, that's great Xero... That will definitely help him out. It looks like the same procedure for my 2000 also. I didn't want to him give wrong info, so I didn't list the procedure for the 2000 Grand Am. But it now looks like the Theftlock is the same for many years.

Welll its the same for 99 & 2000 but I am not certain about 01+. They all should be the same(why change it if it works)from 99+ but you never know.

2000 was the last year for the radio style you guys are talking about in the Grand Am. You can look at Pontiac or Chevy radios at www.replacementradios.com Just go to the Radios category and drill down from there.

Our friend here has the newer version that is "computer-integrated" It has the VIN assigned to the radio and only works in the vehicles it was intended for, so he's not gonna be able to swap a radio from a newer Cavalier to a Grand Am. It can be switched to a few other compatible vehicles but the dealership must re-assign the VIN using their Tech 2 device. And they'll need to program the car's computer with the new radio RPO code if it is an upgrade. (CD when car only had cassette before, for instance.)

Kru im trying to install an after market stereo in the Grand Am if i took out the stockradio and installed this pioneer one it wuld work right
