Rear Diffusers

I was wondering if any body knows what the hell these things do I think they look pretty cool but i really could care less abotu looks. Do they some how lighten up the rear end???

They provide a way for trapped air to escape, with less resistance. They are great for 10 second cars, but do little for daily driving.
