1998 Mit 3000GT SL SOHC/DOHC Help!!

How can you tell if my 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL is a SOHC or DOHC? Also I how do you change the wires and plugs, researched but only found the VR4 post. I can do the first three under the spark plug cover but the other three look tough. I am trying to get a set of manuals now. I have a 88 Quest and 89 Starion and do most of the work on them. Thanks,Gary

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

If it is the DOHC it will say V6 DOHC as said before. Or just open your oil cap and see if there are two cams in there. But if it is the SL it is a dohc. Look agian, you cant miss it, its huge (v6 dohc).

The front valve cover should say DOHC, so should the upper intake manifold(plenum)

Dude, you changed your original post. LOL

Step-by-step instructions on changing your plugs: http://www.team3s.com/FAQplugs2.htm
One thing to that was different on my '94 SL was that there is an extra bolt that is connected to the plenum that isn't mentioned in the guide and 2 bolts that hold this one other piece onto the plenum (there's also a small silver gasket there so don't lose it when it falls out...I almost threw mine away ). Not sure if it'll be the same for yours but just a heads up. Good luck!

lol you just answered your own question in your post.

An SOHC spark plugs are all easily accessible.

DOHC spark plugs have under the spark plug cover and 3 under the intake manifold.

Thanks for the info on the post.I guess the manufactors decided to get more of our money by complicating repair procedures so mechanically uninclined people will bring it to the dealership. I called Precision Tune yesterday and they wanted $300 just for labor to install my Nology wires and plugs that came with the car when I bought it. I got a 98 3000GT SL with 110k, loaded no damage xcellent condition in Arkansas for $4500. Guy going through a divorce, had to sell. Been through two of them so knows how he feels. I will be picking you guys brains for more info if I cannot find it in the search area. Already got the kist of mods for the NA. Thanks again,Gary

Re: 1998 Mit 3000GT SL SOHC/DOHC Help!!

^^$300 to install some plugs and wires???? NO WAY!!! That's a total rip off! Definitely do it yourself and come on the board to ask questions if you get stuck. There are A LOT of well experienced people here who could help you. Furthermore, those step-by-step instructions basically tell you everything you need to know as far as replacing your plugs go. Just remember to number your bolts as you take them off and don't drop any nuts (I dropped 1 into the engine bay somewhere and had this bright idea of dropping the other one to find out where the first one fell and ended up not being able to find either of them LOL).
