extreme wiring issues
Hi everyone, first post here. Just traded my old beat up Starion for a nice looking '92 Lebaron conv, 3.0 5spd. Everything was going well until I was sitting in the drive thru, all of the sudden, my tach stopped working, gas mileage computer shut off, radio just had gibberish on the screen, the doors would unlock, but would not lock. After getting home, I took a look at fuses, and the 10amp for interior lights was blown, i replaced it, and everything worked again, a week later, same story, only this time when I replaced the fuse, nothing happened. I recently found out when I turn the parking lights (and interior lights) on, my doors will lock again, but everything else still does not work. I have looked at the wiring, and nothing looks altered. I see a blue 6 pin connector sitting under my dash, thought that might be the culprit, went to the local wrecking yard, and every car just had the connector sitting there like mine. Is it a diagnostic connector, or is something actually supposed to be attached to it. I did a continuity test and two of the wires on it do go to the gas mileage computer. I am stumped... any ideas anyone?
Thanks for your time Tony |

Re: extreme wiring issues
Your problem is not in the blue connector. You had a short that blew the fuse and then went open. You will need to get a wiring diagram and follow each wire from the fuse that blew to each item that will not work now.

Re: extreme wiring issues
Try autozone.com. They do not have the Lebaron but have the 92 Dodge Shadow which has the same wiring diagram.

Re: extreme wiring issues
the wd's in the '94 Lebaron Service Manual are pretty readable and quite complete. It's pricey - probably $90 by now, but I imagine you can order one through your friendly Chrysler Dealer - They ususally license discontinued manuals to a third party. The '92 is probably also available, and probably about the same.

Re: extreme wiring issues
Hmm... I blew a fuse once that caused my locks to only be able to unlock, I believe it interfered with the interior lights too. If you look in the fuse box under the hood, there's a fuse called something like "IOD" <- that was blown. Replaced it and everything was ok. As for the radio, the only time I've seen a Chrysler radio display gibberish is on my Chrylser Concorde. It had an aftermarket radio when I got it, and I replaced it with a junk yard stock radio. For a long time it would not work properly and display gibberish. I thought it was a bad radio, but it works fine now. That is definately an electrical problem, I'm not sure what causes it, but my Concorde was sitting with a dead battery when my radio was being stupid, after I jumped it of course. With a new battery it's fine. Perhaps the wire thats always hot is being disconnected or something. And for the gas mileage computer, I have no idea. Because I don't think it actually has a wire that's always hot, it just reads the body computer, which gets wires that are always hot. And it's insane how the power locks and the headlights are connected... My friend's Dynasty that we changed the body computer on, when you turn on the headlights, the locks lock and stay lock-ing. Hmm. Perhaps this is a body computer problem, I rewired the Dynasty to accept a New Yorker's body computer that had more options and such.
Try this: unplug your battery, then check all your fuses, under the hood and inside the car, replace bad fuses. Put the battery back after about maybe 30 minutes. See if that works. If not, get to your body computer, its behind the passenger side kick panel, that's the part that the passenger would kick if sitting in your car. It has a little vent on it. It's part of the door trim, next to the seat on the bottom of the door frame, so you'll need to unscrew the 5 or so screws that are completely rusted out by now. And I think there's one screw on the actual kick panel too. For the rusty screws, you might as well drill them out. Anyway, I'd say just unplug and plug back in your body computer, may be a loose wire or something. Check the plug wires for broken ones or anything like that. |
