How difficult to install struts on '94 Taurus

There is a clicking noise on the front driver's side of my Taurus when I go over bumps. I'm pretty sure that its coming from the strut because I layed under the car with my hand on the strut and had a friend push down on the front end and as it clicked, I could feel vibration at the strut. I called a tire place and they said it would be $476.00 to replace both struts, which included alignment. Is replacement a DIY job? there is a shop about 10 miles away where I can then get it aligned. Thanks.

Not too difficult if you have plenty of tools and jacks. One tool that is not in every toolbox is a special tool to compress the springs around the struts.(you reuse the springs) If you decide to tackle the job, I suggest you purchase a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual and read over the procedure. Seems there is always a trick along the way that the repair manual points out. The spring compressor tool can probably be rented. I would check on the price of struts at an Advance auto parts or Autozone if you have one near you. I think about 60 dollars each but I haven't priced them lately. You could save some big money doing it yourself.

Clicking sound eh? It may just be the upper mount, it's usually bearing driven, similar to the setup in the rear hub bearings. Much cheaper if that's the case.

Either way, the strut spring has to be removed and you have to take care with it, I know a few people that suffered injury because they didn't compress the spring... As mechhound says, you can rent spring compressors (some shops will lend them free with a deposit).

Is there any bounce to the front of the car? The struts may be ok.

Thank you both for the good information.

rhynes - The front of the car still has the bounce I would expect, and both sides have the same bounce. Also, when driving, there is no pull to either direction. Are you referring to the upper mount for the strut? Thanks!

Make sure you check your sway bar links, they are notorious for causing noise..
