How do you get service engine soon codes on a 99 Grand Am GT?

Hi there, how can I get codes on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT when the Service Engine Soon light comes on? I'd like to do it myself, any ideas?

Thanks!

This is an OBD II system. You will need a code reader or code scanner to read the codes. A reader will read the codes but you will need a scanner to clear them once you repair the problem. You can buy a scanner at Sears, Autozone, e-bay and yes even WalMart. Once you have the scanner you will connect it to the connector under the dash. Usually on the right side of the steering wheel but can be on the left.

Thanks man, great advice! A friend had a scanner, found the connector under the dash to the left like you said, P0442! Thanks!
