Lightbulb IS this car going to even run?

Okay, I was at AutoTrader.com and I found a Mercedes Benz for $4500 and it is a 1993.. I am being told by my family that if it is that cheap that it probably won't run. What do you think? If i buy it, will it probably break down? Please help.

Thanks!!

Okay, none of us (including you, it seems) have ever even seen it, inspected it, driven it, or heard it run. No mention of the model, condition, mileage or service record
How the hell could anyone (including you, it seems) possibly answer your question??

No magicians in here, okay - seek specialist help

lighten up yourself

honestly, some people need a wake-up call ... if there's anyone home

and just how could you, with any certainty whatsoever, answer his question - which was "Will it probably break down?" ... from a link?!?!

How can you do that, eh?

You might want to pass on that car

Unless there is some unusual circumstance, like the old story about a divorcing wife who's soon-to-be ex said, "Just sell the car, and we'll split the money," so she decided to sell it cheap just for spite, $4,500 sounds unusually low for a 93. If it's a fair price, the most optimistic guess is a very high mileage 190E, maybe 150,000 miles or so.

There is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes. If maintenance has been neglected, they can get very expensive to repair. However, if this one has been well maintained, which is why you would want to see the maintenance records and receipts, and if you are pleased with a test drive, I would suggest that you find a good independent mechanic who specializes in Mercedes, and spend a hundred bucks or so for a thorough pre purchase inspection. For this to be worthwhile, it MUST be performed by someone who knows what potential trouble spots to look for on that car.

If it is in fact a 93 190E with 150 to 200 thousand miles, AND it has been reasonably well maintained, AND a good pre purchase inspection reveals nothing really exciting, you should be able to get another 50 to 100 thousand miles out of it pretty easily.

Or look for a mid 80's diesel. They can be found in that price range in good shape.
