How do you get an avatar?

Can someone explain this for me? I keep trying, and it says "This is not a valid file". I'm not the most computer literate, so I need a little guidance. Does it have to be a certain size or something? Thanks

Re: How do you get an avatar?

I presume you want a picture under your name on the left side of your posted posts?

If so, look at the darker blue heading line just under the Automotive Forums>Coffee Break>COMPLETELY off-topic.....etc. line.

Click User CP, in Control panel goto edit avatar.

Use the download from computer text-line.

** I found it best to have whatever pic. you want to use to already be in either My Documents or My Pictures. Use the one you want, and enter it in.

See if that works. It's been a while since I put my attack pig, but I don't recall anything needing to be a certain size or anything to bring it in.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

yeah, he got that far, cuz it says 'not a valid file'.

it's gotta be 100x100 i think, maybe 90x90... that, and it's gotta be a .jpg or .bmp. i don't think .gif works, but you can try.

where you are uploading your picture, there should be written somewhere the specs, like file size and resolution.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

Thanks for the help, I tried that though. I already had it in My pictures and all. I just click custom avatar, then browse to pull up my pics, and then click on the right one, but it still tells me I've done it wrong. Thanks again for your help Knifeblade.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 20.0 KB (whichever is smaller).

Yeah, U have to manually size it to 100 by 100, and I think that you do that by R-clicking the pic, and resizing it. Or renaiming the pic. as a jpeg.

If you hover over the pic., U should get basic info. on a drop-down screen telling you it's X x X size or KB usage. Now, I honestly don't know how to resize a pic. to get it to the dimensions required [100x100 pixels] size. Maybe someone can help out with that little bit of magic.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

I saved it and shrank it down to meet the requiremants, it's now 75x80 and only 17kb. It still won't go. Struggling.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

i had the same problem with mine. i just used the Paint program on my computer to keep shrinking it down until it fit. you could try saving the file as a different kind of picture. (jpeg, gif, tif) if that doesn't work..try a new pic?

If you got that part of the pic to spec then it's just not save in the right file format. .jpg

Re: How do you get an avatar?

Yeah, when you choose your pic. , look in the second text line, it something like choose file type, then choose .jpg, and the comp. will convert your pic. to that format and it should attach to the avatar.

Re: How do you get an avatar?

If you're working with photoshop, try using the "save for web" option and choosing a file that is small in size but still looks decent.
