My plan for next mods; I could use advice

So since my car's been gone, I've come to discover that I have an insatiable need to modify things. Lately, since I can't modify the car, I've been upgrading my home theater setup (26" LCD HDTV, 5.1 speaker home theater system...). I've realized (yesterday in fact) that I probably should discontinue doing that as I've completely run out of room (my room is a 10'x10' box and my GF just moved in) so I've turned my attention back to what I'm going to do with the car when I get it back. The complete mod list is in the sig so here are my ideas. I'd appreciate any feedback on my plan. I've driving it back to FL in May and doing all the work over a week and a half using my dad's help and tools.

Keep in mind that I will NOT be upgrading the turbo any further. EVO16g is as big as I go so I want you to consider my mod plans with that limiting factor.

I've got a walbro 190 in my nightstand drawer. I know it flows *just* under the the amount of fuel that can max out the turbo but I don't foresee ever acquiring the mods needed to get to that level.

I'm thinking of getting an e-bay FMIC and some e-bay pipes (piping similar to this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-5-I...31777872QQrdZ1). I would definitely appreciate some advice on IC size. I'd rather not have to mow down my front bumper if I don't have to. I know it doesn't have to be excessively large to handle an EVO16g also. I think I want to go with 2.5" pipes. I've read 3" is too big for the turbo and flow rates can be affected.

With the pump and FMIC, I should be able to safely raise boost a good amount (from about 12) and not knock.

I'd love to upgrade the exhaust (yes it's still stock) but I have my reasons for not doing so. My dad will cover my car insurance until Aug if I leave the exhaust stock (crazy rule and doesn't make sense to me but who am I to complain). After Aug, I'm definitely hitting the exhaust hard. A few questions though about that. I need to register my car in MA and I need to pass emissions so I can't get rid of the cat? I'd also rather not deal with changing out a test pipe for a cat whenever I need to get tested. I want it to be a done deal. I've looking into the Magnaflow high flow cat. Does anyone know if it can be a direct bolt on to the RRE downpipe (currently my downpipe of choice) if you get the 3" 3 bolt flange?

I know I'm going to be told I need a tuning device before I do all this. I'm saving up for DSMLink and planning to go that route. I have the logger now so that I know I'm not knocking. I'm not going to start squeezing performance out of the car until I get the DSMLink so I personally am not to worried about it.

If I were to get DSMLink before I do any of my planned upgrades, I'll be limited by the stock exhaust still. The FMIC and fuel pump(which I already own) will give me an immediate boost in speed as long as I do it safely and make sure I'm not knocking. I think I'd do DSMLink after I get an exhaust. Please feel free to disagree with me and tell me I'm looking at it the wrong way.

Now the ultimate question. 660's or 550's? The fuel injectors will be my last major hold up. I figure I'll do those last. I'm 95% certain I should go with 660's but I'd like some opinions especially if you disagree with my above logic.

Thanks for your help. I can't wait to get my car back (hopefully by end of Feb ).

without an exhaust your turbo won't be able to breathe. Performance will probably be less than stock, or slightly better.

for the intercooler I would look at the johnny race car intercoolers, cheap, and enough cooling for any 16g. The 190 fuel pump is fine

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

I know the exhaust is a HUGE constraint in my system but I should be able to make more power than stock. Spyderturbo007 is still running the stock catback and he dynoed at 242whp. Granted, he's got injectors, a tuning device, DP and highflow cat. As far as I can surmise though, I don't know if having a DP and HF cat with the stock catback will do anything for you. You can still fit only so much air out through the tubes. I can see how having a bigger catback and stock DP and cat will help because the air expands doesn't have to travel as far to get to a more spacious region in the system.

It's been a while since I've taken physics but my main point is that even though it is a big restriction, the stock exhaust will still allow me to up my horsepower noticably over stock before becoming the biggest bottleneck.

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

I had a friend with most bolt-ons and a evoiii 16g, but stock exhaust. He spooled at near 4.5k, something to keep in mind, it could have just been his.

But why do things in the wrong order? Why bottleneck yourself? I like to get rid of the weakest link first ya know? makes sense.

I don't know what really to tell you. XO ebay cores are perfectly fine. Tons of people are using them, with 99% good resuluts. The day's of having to spend 600-800 on a good FMIC setup are over.

I ran my very simple setup down the track last summer on a stock exhaust for a 14.0 flat ET. Sence I have bought a 3in turbo back and DSMlink (not installed yet) And its night and day after 4000 rpms.

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

I know how right you guys are about the exhaust. Hmmm. For some reason, upgrading the exhaust feels a bit daunting. What do you think of this idea: 3" Megan Downpipe, Magnaflow high flow cat, Megan Exhaust tip. Take it to an exhaust shop and have them cut down the megan dp and weld on the cat. Then have them bend me the cat back and weld on the muffler? Is it cheaper/easier to buy the bends from some 3rd party and have the exhaust shop just do the welding? I certainly can't weld.

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

Well, some exhaust shops can build you an 02housing-back 3" exhaust all mandrel bent, so try to find that. If you want to go the meghan downpipe way, make sure they fixed the issues they were having with GSX fitment, I believe scottsee had an issue with fitment. Do you really need a cat? I guess you have to pass emissions, then a high flow cat will work fine. Just make sure the catback is mandrel bent 3" as well, or you will still have a bottleneck.

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

Be careful how you choose your exhaust in MA. I don't know where in MA you are, but odds are you will have trouble with the cops. Even with a presilencer and a tip silencer in the EVO (it's not loud at all) I get harassed constantly... The law in mass says that you can't modify the exhaust in any way that makes it louder than stock, but the cops and judges read that as you can't modify the exhaust AT ALL. It's pretty gay, and it's tough to fight it. I won my last court date, but it's a rare victory. If I had a DSM again I would do another home built exhaust but with a good presilencer and a real rear muffler, like a edelbrock RPM or similar. Just not worth the hassle to gain 5 hp... The cat should get you emissions legal if you find a decent shop. Some stations will still harass you and not give you a sticker since its not a stock cat. MA sucks...

For the injector question, just do them when you get DSMlink, so you can go big and be done with it. I would recomend 950s hands down. If you end up going with an AFC or other similar setup you'll have to compromise between the 550s for race gas or 650s for pump gas, and deal with the consequences.

Re: My plan for next mods; I could use advice

Thanks for the heads up Kevin. I've read a lot about exhausts but only from a "gain the most horsepower" prospective (aka no cats, ebay muffler, etc.) . I'm not sure how to go about looking for a presilencer and a real rear muffler. I'll do some searches when I'm not at work. It might be worth it to travel a bit to get it done if I'm going to get crap about getting it done in MA. I'm in the Boston area so I'm sure everything you've said applies in full force. Stupid state...

Too bad about that exhaust noise law. A friend of mine simply got a cheap down pipe and drilled some holes in it to let out the extra exhaust and called it a day. Its pretty loud but it seems to work ok.

I wouldnt recommend it though.

well your friend is a god damn idiot...that's just hindering performance with all those exhaust leaks. ask him if he felt a "real gain in performance"...if he says yes, slap him.
