Question 96 Blazer having troube shifiting

Hello,

I been dealing with this problem where the truck wont shift out of park sometimes. I slam my foot on the brake while moving the shifter to release it. I know something is wrong because it use to shift while just pushing the brake in alittle now u really have to fight with it.

Specs:

96 Blazer
Steering Column Shifter
4.3 V6

Re: 96 Blazer having troube shifiting

think we may need a little more info here

- When it worked correctly did you hear the electric "click" when the truck was running in park and you touched the brake?
- do you have tilt steering? and if you tilt the steering wheel up or down does it make it easier/Harder/same to shift from park?
- if you don't have tilt is the steering wheel solid, up down/ left right. I am trying to find out if the colume is cracked,

Let me know and I will see what Ideas I can give you.

Side question, was the shifter on the wheel a factory option or was it aftermarket. I have a 97 (newer body style) and the shifter is on the floor. so I am assuming by this that like my older ones you must have the older body style 96. Was this truck not sold as a 95 though?

Yes, the truck has tilt and no moving the tilt up and down has nothing to do with that problem I tried...

The 96 is the new body style with OBDII so it wasn't sold as a 95..

The steering column shifter ended in 96 for the blazer it's stock..

96 an 97 don't have many differences maybe just some interior changes.

Re: 96 Blazer having troube shifiting

I have issues with my 97 every once in a while doing that. It seems to be a relay issue with the brake safety switch. It doesnt click when it wont work. I usually just step on the brake pedal quickly a few times and it will click and then work again. Its worse when its cold though. I just havent had time to replace that relay yet. Course, it could be the switch at the pedal too. Older Chevy pickups were bad about that with the brake light switch.
