Shadow intake swap
I race a 93 Shadow with an 89 motor in it. The car is a 2.5, Throttle Body non-turbo. Would it be at all possible to put a turbo intake on the car? I figured this way the butterfly flap in the throttle body is bigger, and then, if needed, I could possibly put on a throttle body off of a V-6? Would it be functional even without the turbo or supercharger on it? If anybody knows if this is possible, or if I would have to do anything to make it possible, please fill me in. I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Shadow intake swap
The turbo manifolds have holes in them for the fuel injectors (multipoint fuel injection. You would have to plug them or leave the non-functional injectors in there. Also, since the manifold was designed only to manage airflow (dry) and not air/fuel (wet) you may have some fuel distribution problems. If you install a complete fuel management computer you could use the injectors and convert your TBI setup to Multipoint.

Re: Shadow intake swap
Where could I find the computer for it then?
Also, if I leave the injectors that were in it and still try to run with the throttle body, would it still be functional? Will I get more air in the car? I dont know too much about throttle bodys, fuel injection, mpi, or anything like that, so any help would be great.. thanks again |

Re: Shadow intake swap
Here's another thing. I found a computer on www.forwardmotioninc.net. It says that its for an 89' Shadow, 2.5 automatic with a turbo. Well, my car doesnt have a turbo on it. Should it still work, even with my car being a throttle body and not fuel injected? If not, what would I have to change and how hard should it be?

Re: Shadow intake swap
If you change the manifold, you will change the airflow characteristics of the engine and your stock TBI will not work right at all. These old systems are very sensitive to change and do not work well with it. If you are not a advanced skill fuel system mechanic, I would not mess with the system. Also, the Turbo computer would not work well b/c it is expecting turbo boost. Those that have tried useing the turbo computer without a turbo have reported that up to about 1/2 throttle the engine seems to run OK but after 1/2 throttle the engine falls flat b/c the computer retards the timing, expecting the turbo to kick in.

Re: Shadow intake swap
You say that the computer will retard the timing because it is waiting for the turbo boost. Well, what if I am able to advance the timing too much, to compensate for when the computer retards it? Or, maybe advancing the cam would do it? Or would it still not work?

Re: Shadow intake swap
You would be better off getting a MOPAR PERFORMANCE intake manifold and a Holley 2-bbl carburetor for your racing machine. You will not be street legal at that point but if you are only racing and not licensing for the street then it won't matter. You will need a standalone ignition and new distributer. You can expect about 15 hp increase with the new manifold /carb and ignition.
