94 Jetta Transmission Trouble

My Jetta will not move in reverse, drive or second gear it only moves in 1st gear (auto transmission). this all started when my battery went dead. I replace the battery with one out of another car and it worked just fine (drove it for two days). I then went and bought a new battery and after installing it I have the same problem again (only moves in 1st gear). Does anyone know what the problem could be.
