Is your check engine light on? You may want to have the codes scanned at Autozone or some place that will do it for free. Can't do it w/o a scanner.

That's pretty low, I would almost thing the fuel pressure regulator was ruptured if you're not getting a CEL. If you are getting a CEL, get those codes pulled.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage

Pete is right ,that kind of mileage is very low.My 93 was down to about 15 mpg and I thought that was bad.My poor mileage was caused by a stuck emergency brake cable,so maybe you would want to check items like that on your truck to see if anything is putting alot of drag on it.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage

Hey, newbie here, to both AF and rangers... Not quite sure how to start a new post...so see if this works...
I as well have poor gas mileage...9-13mpg with a 94 ranger, 2.3:8plug 2wd. Changed the thermostat today because it was idle at 1500rpm. It slowed the rpm, but now the diagnostic is showing EGR problems...(EGR not opening)...would this cause poor gas mileage? what else could I be looking at?
Also, it is manual tranny, when i push in the clutch...the idle tends to fluctuate as well for a min...then settles at idle (1100rpm)
thanks in advance....lookin forward to a bit of help

Snooky
Do you know how to read the codes on your vehicle. It's pretty easy ... once you see someone else do it.

Your vehicle is not OBDll ... so AutoZone can't help.

BTW, my SIL has your model truck ... it probably gets in the low/mid 20's

OOPS! Now I read your post more thoroughly. Your EGR problem is most likely the EGR Pressure type Flow Sensor ( I forget the acronym ), especially if the original is in place.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage

i have a 2000 4x4 with crappy milleage also. it used to get about 15 or 16. now i can't get over 10. it has 33" mudders on it so the odometer is slow so it's prob getting 12 instead of 10. i tried fuel injec cleaner, new plugs and wires, different gas, you name it. even bought k&n cold air kit. no check engine light and it runs smooth. even put synthetic fluids in everything. i'm stumped with the crappy milleage thing too!!!

Does the 2000 have a vacuum operated fuel pressure regulator? Never been under the hood of one...

Thanks for the info, in the time i spent away from the forum, I changed the thermostat, and found a huge difference in mileage, and general work of the truck. getting somewhere around 17-18 mpg which is not bad. I also found that the EGR valve is stuck...and i am in process of getting another one. I only bought the truck about 2 weeks ago...and decided to change the plugs, i noticed that it was definitely not helping the truck much considering they were ORIGINAL FACTORY PLUGS! I cracked off 6 of 8 of them. fun stuff, and now waiting to see how the mileage is again...will keep ya updated.
