Angry 95 Neon

I Just Changed The Timing Belt On My Sohc Neon. It Was Free So I Said Hell Why Not. Anyway, The Belt Was Chewed Up Pretty Bad And The Tensioner Had Snapped. I Got The Codes Pulled From The Car And It Showed A Camshaft Position Sensor Fault. The Mechanic Said That Was Because Of The Timing Belt. My Question Is Would A Bas Camshaft Position Sensor Cause The Car Not To Start? It Sounds Exactly As It Did Before I Replaced The Timing Belt. I Have Done The Obvious, Battery, Fuses, Etc. Im Stuck!!

Re: 95 Neon

I just did a belt on a 97 and the first time I put the belt back on and tighted the tensioner the crank moved. So I took everything off and was very carefull this time and double checked to make sure the timing marks were in the right place.

If you know you did this right then I would say start at spark and fuel. Maybe compression test.

When it turns over you can watch the can shaft and make sure the valves are all moving.

I wouldn't think the camshaft sensor but this is a distributorless car so I am sure the sensor has something to do with spark

Good luck and post more

thanks

Lightbulb

Yeah I Will Try That Later. Its Weird Because After I Tightened Everything Up I Cranked The Motor And The Timing Marks Were Lined Up. Crank And Cam. I Was Looking At The Rapair Manual And It Says To Back The Crankshaft Back 1/2 Notch. Then Its Says Later That The Timing Marks Should Match Up. I Will Try To Test For A Spark.

Re: 95 Neon

When this thing happened to me I ended bending all of the intake valves, so do a compression test and find out.

IN REGARDS TO THIS, WOULDNT YOU HEAR SOME SORT OF NOISE IN VALVES WERE BENT? I MEAN WHEN YOU CRANK THE ENGINE OVER.

Re: 95 Neon

not always, if the pistons got grooves from hitting the valves no. It depends in how much you bent the valcves. sometimes you dont bent the valves enogh to cause much noise, but you bent them to loose compression.

Agreed! You can bend the valves badly or just enough to screw things up for you.

Re: 95 Neon

The neon must have cutouts in the pistons for the valves because when we had the belt off and the head was on #1 TDC. we plasti-guaged the rod berrings. We had to turn the crank to get to #2 & #3 and it never hit anything.

good luck

Thumbs down

Okay. I Checked Compression Last Night. The Gauge Did Not Move At All. I Checked Each Cylinder And Got No Movement From The Gauge. I Am Starting To Believe That My Valves Are Bent. Could I Have Done The Compression Test Wrong? I Didnt Hold Down The Gas Pedal And My Engine Was Not Warm. It Wont Start To Get Warm. I Am Thinking About An Engine Swap. I Hear That They Run Like $500 For A Used Neon Engine.

If you followed the directions, I don't see how you could check it wrong. Your valves are probably bent pretty bad if you are getting no compression. Neon engines are cheap and plenty to swap in. $300 from a junkyard and you can be up and running in no time. That or you can replace the valves.

I WILL PROBABLY JUST CHANGE THE VALVES. IT ACTUALLY SEEMS CHEAPER FOR A NEW ENGINE WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THE NEW GASKETS AND BOLTS THAT I WILL NEED. I WILL LOOK INTO A NEW ENGINE AND HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO INSTALL. I TRULY DO NOT FEEL LIKE TACKLING THAT JOB.

YEAH, Just do a engine swap, I tried doing a Head Gasket and it would never start made sure everything was perfect notches matched just wouldn'r start. So I swap motors and Happliy Ever After. Motor cost me $350.

I Went Ahead And Took The Cylinder Head Off. The Valves Look Good. I Havent Taken Then Loose Yet. Can You Tell If They Are Bent Just By Looking At Them Or Do They Need To Be Removed And Examined?

Re: 95 Neon

If the head is off then pour a little water around the valve seats.
