Check the connection to the plugs on the rear window. Take them off and put them back on again.. Does the little amber light come one when you puch the button?

Have you done any work in the car like puttin new speakers in the rear?.. Somthing could have been pinched or ungrounded somewhere along the way. Its hard to say.. This is one of those pain in the ass things that your going to have to start from the back and work your way following the wires and see WTF is wrong... if its not the fuse, connections onto the filiment.. there is really no other way..

Re: 97 Cavalier rear defog light problem . . . .

check the connection on the back of the fuse and the wire to the defogger, maybe the connection in the back of the defogger.. every wire from the battery to the defroster should have some power when that junk is on

Re: 97 Cavalier rear defog light problem . . . .

when you swith it on at idle do the engine revs suddenly drop slightly from the extra draw on the alternator, if so all connections must be fine as it's getting juice. If not then break in the circuit. If it's particularly cold there could even be condensation in the conector at the rear screen or some light corrosion, try spraying a water dispersant like WD40 on the conection (this wont short anything) and that may help.

Re: 97 Cavalier rear defog light problem . . . .

I just had my 2003 Cavalier in for an oil change and mentioned the exact same problem you are having, and they suggested a faulty wire under the driver side dashboard near the floor. It was suggested that the heat from the heater may have damaged the wire. Upon inspection there was a wire with some damage and after replacing this section of wire, my rear defogger started working again. I hope this helps.
