rock hit my windshield

I've got a tiny spot where a rock hit my windshield. What can I do to stop it from spreading. I had the same thing on another car and now the windshield looks like a spider web.

Re: rock hit my windshield

You can take it to a glass shop where they fill the crack with a glue. This sometimes makes it worst.

The other option that sometimes works is get the glass nice and clean, and dry.
Then put a thin layer crazy glue on the ding. Try getting it into the hole it's self. You might want to redo this from time to time.

If the rock chip is anywhere near the defrost vents I'll wish you good luck with it lasting right now.

I've been told that those kits are basicly crazy glie with a special applicator and a bigger price tag

Plus actually injecting something into your windsheild can cause the ding to run.

If you've got glass coverave Your insurance company might fix it for free though tm

Re: rock hit my windshield

Check with your insurance company. A lot of times windsheilds are covered and fixed for free. I've seen several get professionally repaired and you can't even tell where the crack was.

All good suggestions. You could take the cheap way out and buy the glass repair kit, just be sure to get a kit that contains a small clear plastic sticky piece you cover the chip with (about the size of a quater)

No glass coverage on my policy; most cover this under comprehensive coverage.
I had a stone chip/ding/crack repaired for free by my insurance company (Allstate), it's cheaper for them to pay the $75.00 repair instead of the $800.00 windshield replacement (their cost $300 after my deductible). It lasted until I traded the car in without any problems (7 years).

Re: rock hit my windshield

$800 for a windshield replacement? I just had mine done for $264.

tmjohnson, I agree with Blazee. Call your insurance company first to see what your options are.

Re: rock hit my windshield

Windshield replacement is the one thing I would suggest everyone have on their coverage. I have had 4 or 5 put in my 92 and the total cost to me has been zero.

Re: rock hit my windshield

It's $200.00 deductiable in BC Canada

They doubled it about 4 years ago, and they were going to raise it to 400 until they realized that most of us figured out we could replace the windsheild out of our own pocket for less

It was for a '94 Pontiac Transport (monchrome tint- redish mirror appearance ,plus the fancy do-dad defroster matte black surfaces around the perimeter)

And as you and many others state, if you have more than liability coverage, call you insurance agent, most likely it will be repaired if possible for free, like mine was.

Edit;
oops, I removed the embedded antenna part- the roof on that car was the antenna as I recall

Re: rock hit my windshield

You guys are getting screwed on the replacement either way . I was just quoted $150 for the replacement on my 89 . And they will come to me to do it . I don't have comp , otherwise it would be free to me . Rob

Re: rock hit my windshield

Well I'm stuck with a goverment run insurance company where I live and yes they are screwing us over.

But what I do when I get new glass is get the most expensive piece that I can since it still costs me the same.

In the spring when I have to change my Blazers windshield I'll be trying to get a new windshield with a tint on the top and hopefully an antenna (If any came with antenna's molded right in)

I don't dare to drive without comprehensive here due to a very high population of deer that like to preform their own crash tests on our cars. Plus then I'm covered for fire and theft

Re: rock hit my windshield

We have a high population of deer here too , Fortunately the only way I ever hit them is with a gun . But our deer are dwarfs compared to Canadian deer which seem to be comparable to Elk in body size . I would opted for brush bars if I lived up there . Rob

I watched a buddy of mine use one of them. THEY SUCK! You have to push on the plunger so damn hard it actually cracked the whole windshield. I told him not to use it and that the pressure would make it worse, did he listen no. I laughed my ass off at that one!
