Alright first off, I bought my 89 camaro 305 tbi, from an older woman that bought it new. She had every recipt, so a sweet buy. Anyways, she had told me there was a new computer in it, but the check engine light flashes really fast, like it's retarded or something. So I took the computer out and was gonna see if they put the prom chip in wrong, and to my suprise there wasn't one in there. So to my question, what is the difference in having the chip and not having one. I know it can't be good, because it sets everything to default, just wondering how my gas mileage will change when I get my chip for it, I get around 180mi. to a tank of gas, and my idle sux, along with cold start. Thanx
My next question is about a 86 Dodge Daytona 2.5 tbi non-turbo. I know this is the camaro forum, but the daytona forum is no help. So I got the car, had a real ruff idle and miss. Took it to the shop and he narrowed it down to 3 things: ECM - power module, ECM - logic module, and a clogged cat converter. The symptoms are, gas soaked plugs, excessive gas fumes and black smoke, and the only way to start it is to clean the plugs and hold the gas pedal to the floor and it will run for bout 1 min. tops. So I have replace power module, map sensor, and plugs and wires. I have got to figure this out, please help me on this one, thanks, and oh yea compression is good, no head gasket problems, and no vaccum leaks. Thanks again. |

Re: 89 TBI got a couple questions
Well, I didn't bite at this one at first, A, I'm not much of tbi guy, B I'm definately not dodge, don't care how much ya pay me to look at em, except I did look at one with a knarly hole knocked through the block when the connecting rod blew apart
![]() On the Camaro, you obviously need a chip in there. The PROM (programable read only memory) is what stores the vehicles look up tables,so you don't even have a "default" value right now, basicly the ingintion system ESC on the firewall is your computer right now. On the slopar, sorry dodge, you're running way rich. I seriously doubt it would be anything with the ECM, that sounds like typical lazy diagnostics there. It only starts when you hold the pedal down because that is shutting the injectors off. You need to determine why there is so much fuel being dumped, whcih I'll take bets on a bad pressure regulator or massivly leaking injectors (doubt it but possibly). I would throw O2 at it, but the O2 doesn't come into the picture until a few minutes after the eingine has been running. BUT, on a GM the CTS (ccolant temp sensor) is a key player on fuel trim right from when the engine cranks. But even with it disconnected the motor WILL run, rich as heck and like a scolded dog tho. I think you just have a basic fuel system problem. Check the regulator out, pull the vacuum line and see if there is any hint that gas is going through it. |

Re: 89 TBI got a couple questions
I got the car at the shop right now, but he's just guessing, i'll try the regulator tomorrow. Is there anyway to check the injector w/out buying a new one, ex. compression check? Thanks for the input, on both, but especially the dodge, its my g-friends car, and I have to fix it. Thanks for the help.

Re: 89 TBI got a couple questions
which one is in the shop?
On the dodge you can make sure there is no fuel in the vacuum line, visually look at the fuel spray, should be sprayinga nice cone not dribbling and finally a pressure test to determine if you need a pump or new filter. |
