95 Ranger dies while coasting

I have a 1995 Ranger with almost 180,000 miles on it. It is of the 2.3L 2wd variety. My problem arose a few days ago. I was driving downhill and went to downshift and the engine died. This has happened several times since. Another example of when this happened was i was coasting to a stop with the clutch pedal pushed in, and still in second. It started running rough and died.

Last night i took some time and tried to get to the bottom of this. I've realized it only happens when breaking hard in nuetral. The CEL is on with code P1443- Evaporative Emission Control System control System Control Valve. AutoZone doesn't carry this. Is it a dealer item only? Would this cause this problem. Drove fine with CEL for 6 moths. I've recently replaced the fuel filter, so thats not it. Have a full tank of gas, and have ran fuel injector cleaner through. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 95 Ranger dies while coasting

I had a similar problem with my 2wd 95 with a 2.3L and a 5 speed. I noticed mine would intermittantly start cutting out and die when I would apply the brakes. This problem occured more severly if the headlights were on. When it would happen I would press the brake and notice both turn signal indicator lamps on the dash light up, then when I let off the brake the turn signal indicator lamps would go dim, but they would still be on. The whole time the engine would be misfiring. Most of the time I could just turn the headlights off for a few seconds and the problem would go away. I am pretty sure it was a bad ground, but it didn't happen very often and wouldn't do it when I was trying to troubleshoot. I ended up getting rid of it before I got it fixed, was moving and ran out of time. Might soundlike a long shot but I have heard of bad brakelights causing malfunctions like these.
