Amazing technology helps police find lawbreakers

The police in our area now have a new tool to help alert them to a stolen vehicle, or one that has a suspended or revoked registration. It is called the Mobile Plate Hunter 900, and is made by Remington-Elsag Enforcement Systems, a partnership between a gun manufacturer, and an Italian postal technology company. There are 2 cameras on the roof of the police car, and are capable of scanning 60 plates a minuteIt actually takes a photograph of the plate, and then compares it to a database downloaded daily by the police officer from the state DMV. A light will then go off when a plate has been detected to be stolen, suspended, or revoked. It even can tell the cop if the car is wanted in connection with a crime, or if the owner has warrants out on them. The cop then has to locate the vehicle detected, and the system tells the officer which camera the plate came from. One cop was quoted as saying, " Now we have one more reason to pull people over. Thew units cost $20,000, and they have 2 units, one is permanently installed on a cruiser, and the other one is mobile, making it easier to transfer it from one vehicle to another. (As I'm typing this, the theme from "Cops" is running through my mind )

we have the same thing all over central london, its used to record your number/licence plate so you can't escape the £8~$16 daily charge to drive into central london.

I suppose crime does pay depending on what side you're on.

Just another reason for cops to give stupid tickets out. "oh shit we have to fund these POS 20k license plate readers because we're to slow to do it ourselves."

Yeah except when it comes to the scenario of a kidnapper taking some 7 year old kid and he can't go 1 mile before he's got cruisers all over his ass.

But god forbid the cops get technology to help them.

If you ain't got nothin' to hide, what's the worry?

I'm surprised it took this long for a system like that to be available here.

This country always seems to lag behind Europe and Britian in technological advances. Like 2.2 Straight six said in the above post, "we have the same thing all over central london, its used to record your number/licence plate so you can't escape the £8~$16 daily charge to drive into central london." I have friends who are home builders, and home improvement contractors, and they are always telling me how advanced the Europeans and British are in how they build their homes, and such technologies as heating systems, appliances, and energy conservation. I know it is a neccesity there , and it will only take time for it to be so here. That license plate scanner kind of reminds me of the "face recognition" systems that are out there to weed out suspected terrorists, wanted individuals, etc.

^ thats true but alot of those technological advancements dont come here because they're considered infringements on peoples privacy. Like the cameras you have everywhere in London, they wouldnt do that here because they dont have the right to be watching random people 24/7 thats against our rights.

But i'm glad they didnt have those things when my friends used to take me joyriding lol that would of sucked

btw... so anybody that drives into London needs to bay $16?! Thats insane! What about parking?
