starting problem

1993 240 wagon 4cly

won't start, battery tests fine turns over strong, headlights, horn work

will start only if jumper cables are attached from another car as soon as they are disconnected car dies

Any ideas?

Wow. This is pretty strange. Did this problem just begin out of the blue, or was any other work done on the car recently before this started? Sounds like your alternator is putting out reverse polarity. (the headlights, starter and horn don't care about polarity (Ask an old Triumph mechanic!)
