Re: Caps
caps do not do what you think they do. its a common myth that caps restore the power to the amp when it hits a large current draw. this is like 10 percent true. fact is, the cap discharges and while some voltage is provided, your alt still has to recharge the cap basically making it useless. the pupose of a capacitor is to smooth out voltage. it acts as an AC filter which is useful when you are using an inverter that takes AC and makes it DC. unless the inverter is extremely efficient, some AC will still get through. a capacitor is used to remove that AC. another purpose for a cap is to discharge a desired amount of power to acheive a goal. this is where people think they work in car audio. take a camera flash for example. the battery in a camera charges up the capactor, when you push the button the cap discharges giving the light bulb much more power than would normally be obtained from the battery alone. you can hear it charging back up after the flash, its that steady beep sound. but try pushing the button five times in a row. the flash will not go off five times. same with an amp. when your bass hits, the amp draws power from the cap but continues to power the subs without waiting for the cap to recharge, once again making the cap useless.
