Angry Gear Issue...

Out of the blue I now have a gear issue.

2000 GT V6 sportronic

1. From Park to Reverse, the whole car lurches.
2. At Drive, the indicator flashes between Neutral and Drive rapidly
3. If I put it to Sportronic, it shows I'm in 3rd gear.
4. After restarting a few times, I'm finally able to get it into normal Drive.
5. Yes, the 'service engine' light is on.

Any suggestions?

I dont drive a sportronic, but it sounds like your trans is going. How many miles do you have. And if your check engine light is on, thats probably what it is.

Now, you say that is "shows" you are in 3rd...is it really, or is that just what it is showing. Because if it's really in 1st then it might just be a bad chip or something. Either way, there are some trans shops that do free diagnostic. I would get it checked because if it is going, better to get it fixed now, than get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Gear Issue...

i'm going to go w/ it being something electrical possibly? i've heard of bad sensors that may make some of those things happen

otherwise i'd have your trans fluid checked and get your trans checked at mr.transmission or something, i've heard they do free trans checks

ouch

Those replies don't sound too bad...

It's about to hit 80k miles, but being in hawaii it'll take a while...

Yes, it's in 3rd gear. I'm still able to drive, but of course the accel is slow.

I have some friends who suggested the fluids. Will do this weekend.

If it's the trans, how bad would it be to fix it?

Thanks for the help. Atleast now I have a path set on what to follow.

If your trans is shot, bad news....probably close to 2 grand depending on where you go. I went to certified for my old Sebring and it was just over 2200 for a rebuild (more than we traded the car in for...what a pile of shit). If its an electrical component I have no idea because it could be a number of things, and labor prices differ from place to place. But if they catch a trans problem early enough, they might be able to put a band-aid on it, which would cost less....but I doubt that would happen. Good Luck and update us on what you find out.
