ok i am looking at a 71 beetle but want to get some info

well a 71 super beetle is being sold near here and want to know how well the engine is for running and how compicated fixing it is (only a 16 year old with a year of car care under my belt) i also want to know about suitable swaps for engines i know of the mazda rotarys and the chevy v8 but i want somthing that will fit in the engine bay and wont give me to much trouble. i have read about the volvo 4 banger (63?) but want to know if a newer engine will fit (this is from a older magazine from the early 70's) also what is the dodge hemi-head colt engine?

anyone done a swap?

try doing a google or yahoo search for a turbo subaru engine. Ive seen a couple of those and they fit in the beetles rather well because they are also an opposed 4cyl engine, with some mods of course. Here are a couple of links www.vanbran.com/bug/conversion_main.htm

Mike,
I put a Type IV in my 72 Super. The Type IV in mine is out of a 914, but the 73 and later vans also used the Type IV up till the waterboxers came out. The Type IV's came stock as 1700, 1800, and 2000. I have seen them built up to 3000. They bolt to the stock Type I tranny. You will need an upright fan conversion as they came with the fan bolted to the end of the crank. I put a 911 fan kit on mine, but the DTM kit from Jake Raby is a better kit. A good place for information is shoptalkforums.com and got to the Type4rum forum.
pm me if you want any other information.
Clark
