check engine light is on and.......

ok i bought my 2001 cavalier z24 2.4L like 5 months ago...since then ive put sum things on it and had my own little troubles with it but i thought i had everything good....but...my stepdad worked on it the other day and unhooked my o2 sensor by accident and i had drivin it that night....it was throwing so much fuel in the engine and i took it to a machanic and found out it was the 02 sensor..now i have that all hooked up fine....and changed my oil....and when i changed my oil i noticed that it smelled like gas and i could tell that there was some gas in it....i figured it was because of when i ran it with the o2 sensor unplugged and that now it should be fine and it was for awhile.....when i was driving home from school it started to sputter and like started cutting out...i looked down at my gauges and saw my check engine light come on....it just keeps doing it sputtering out every time i shift and i don't understand....i lost my code reader for the check engine light....and i need major help...when it sputters it almosts cuts out and then kicks back in fine till i shift again....if u can help me please email me at [email protected] or reply to the message...thanks

Re: check engine light is on and.......

Welcome to AF on your first post
Hunt up your code reader or head for Auto zone or your local parts place that reads codes for free.
Get codes and post back code no.
But first some tips on free code checks.
Use Caution when getting the free code checks please.
Some parts places do offer free code checks. And also free repair advice. But beware. Just get the code no and post it back here and someone will help you.
They offer the free code checks in the hope of increasing there parts sales.
Almost all of them will also offer mechanical advice and some know what they are doing.
But just remember most of them are parts people pulling codes for free.
Not trained professional tech/mechanics. Even if they pull a 02-sensor code or another sensor related code it does always mean to replace that sensor and your problem will be fixed.
Please just get the code no and post it back here and we will help you.
And also remember the code does not saay replace the sensor it says check it out.

The o2 sensor is (was) located in the factory exhaust manifold, did the new header come equiped with a hole to bolt the o2 sensor into?
Did you install an o2 sensor when installing the new header?
