might be a dumb question but is there any way shut off the service engine light without having to hook it up to a computer?

If you want the light to go out, you could remove the + cable from the battery, and wait a few minutes, then hook it back up. When you start the car, the code should be cleared, but only for a short time. Whatever condition occured that made the light come on in the first place will inevitably occur again, and when it does the light will come back on. Go to autozone and they will retrieve the code for free. Post it here and these guys will surely help. You should not ignore the Service Engine Soon light. It could be an inexpensive sensor gone bad.
